What is digital inclusion, and what does it mean for my business?
Digital inclusion is when a person or business involves themselves with the digital world i.e. Broadband, websites and emails. Businesses benefit from this because no matter the size of the business or who a business caters to, people nowadays use the internet for just about all of their commercial needs, even if it is just information about a product! Think of it as another form of advertising your services to a greater and even world wide market as well as creating a portal which describes your business for your and potential customer reference (a brochure you pay for once).
The need for digital inclusion in Inverclyde
Inverclyde is obviously lacking in terms of online communication and many companies do not have an internet presence. This is due to many businesses in the area being afraid of the cost implications and their own knowledge of using the internet as a marketing tool. This is having an obvious effect on generating commerce in the area as most consumers are local. The area has so much to offer from great car dealerships to first class pubs and restaurants, which unfortunately is being missed because very few people are commuting to Inverclyde to enjoy a day out.
In addition to this a lot of Inverclyde’s businesses have become successful through word of mouth. This is a good thing although for a start up business this can make things very difficult. Commerce in the area is a major factor to the Inverclyde community and for new businesses in the area having to pay huge amounts on advertising in the first year is a real shot in the foot. Very few of them can afford to do so and don’t survive the first year! It is important to have this web presence because maybe someone wanted to walk into your shop but couldn’t at that time. Your website will ensure that he can go home and look at your products at a later time and at his/her convenience. Work is a major factor as few employers allow their employees to phone therefore they will choose to use someone who is online!
